Project 151 is an entirely fan-made multimedia project designed to inform and excite viewers of any age or background about our Earth & environment.
Posts & videos feature poseable pipe cleaner Pokémon figures shown in the habitats each species would call home around New York City- relating them to real-life NYC species, demonstrating scientific facts and skills, and providing new ways of exploring the world we share.
All species shown are entirely owned by the Pokémon Company,
Creatures Inc., Nintendo, and their associated parties.

Pokémon tells a story
of citizen science.
Since the world was introduced to Pikachu with the Pokémon Red and Green video games on the Game Boy 30 years ago, the franchise has been lead by the push to identify and catalogue every species of creature to better understand each fictional region.
While battling is often the most celebrated part of Pokémon, the “collecting” aspect that has made the video games and trading cards so successful is founded in Red and Green’s quest to create a useful index of local species while communicating with a local professor.
Without realizing it, every player is participating in citizen science [public participation in ongoing research] within the framework of a fictional world.
By relating topics through characters loved so dearly around the globe, viewers and participants of all ages approach real, useful scientific knowledge with more enthusiasm & may retain it better than in a classroom.
Pipe cleaners are fun, poseable & approachable.
Noah (@Dynamo-Gear) has been creating articulated pipe cleaner figures for more than a decade, and began making all 151 Pokémon in 2014 as a way of honing his skills.
These figures have been built by hand true to their character inspirations and can be posed in a variety of ways to articulate environmental and ecological topics, to spur scientific thinking and curiosity about our real world.

Wetter, more humid summers due to climate change mean the city processes more water- if it becomes too much for our systems, the sewage that some species enjoy has to be pumped out with it. Grimer benefits, and we’re also able to address the issues with our water recovery systems.

Certain species look almost identical to their ancestors we find as fossils. Kabuto’s was so well-suited to its habitat that there was no need to change dramatically. While it was more common millions of years ago, they can be found in select few places. We’re lucky to share the city with them- you can find an animal with the same story, the horseshoe crab, in NYC’s Jamaica Bay!

In our world, a lot of animal species share similar traits because an initial group of animals split off and their descendants specialized to different environments and lifestyles. Those same environments, having specific needs for survival, might also pressure completely unrelated animals to develop similar traits! We don’t know the ancestors of these pokémon, but their traits gave the species we know a survival advantage in their habitats.
Every species is an
opportunity to inspire.

Engagement with viewers of all demographics and ages across the world, relaying topics applicable to their local environments
Prioritizing and celebrating the use of public transit by showing firsthand just how much is accessible through the New York City subway
Leading “Open Expeditions,” public hikes through natural areas themed around groups of Pokémon, led by our team alongside researchers and stewards of each area, to immerse attendees in nature and inform them from those who know best. Coming Soon!
